Most people I know, myself included, have a love/hate relationship with social media. Instagram can be such a time suck, and I have very often found myself scrolling, scrolling, scrolling and yes, you guessed it, scrolling for hours on end. It annoys me at times, but I’m getting better at setting time limits for myself using the app’s activity feature. Real talk, I get frustrated at times with how long I spend on the app, knowing full well I could be reading more of my book or working on my poetry, but I still use instagram productively as well.
I often find myself getting inspired by content I’ve seen on my feed and I use the save tab to create mood boards. Unfortunately I’ve used them to create a ‘want’ folder as well, which saves things I’ve seen that I want to purchase, and that’s the part of social media that gets tricky. It’s so easy to see more, want more, and compare more, but I believe that with everything in life, social media use is all about balance. I love creating my instagram boards because it reminds me of simpler times. When I was a teen I loved cutting out images from magazines and creating my own mood board collages, and this is, in a sense, the modern version of that.
The positive part of social media is that it helps get my creative juices flowing at times, and inspires me to create. And of course, we’ve always loved Instagram for the style and bag eye-candy it provides. Our favorite ‘gramers are never shy about showing off their favorite carries and we’re back at it today with some seriously lust-worthy picks. One can dream right?

View this post on InstagramOptimism is part of my survival. ? I was diagnosed with clinical depression and anxiety when I was 15. I remember my mom grappling with that – that it was something I should just shake off or get over; that wasn’t a failure of compassion, but more of a cultural misunderstanding that she grew up with around mental health. I think it was especially hard for her to reconcile my inner struggle and deepening depression with my otherwise sunny disposition and my ability to make people laugh and comfort others, things we now know and understand to be part of the hallmark traits of depression. That radiance and urge to make other people happy was part of how I coped with things. And as I’ve grown older and built a wider arsenal and toolkit to handle my anxiety & depression (yes, alongside medication), focusing on gratitude, cautious optimism, and trying to find a silver lining in virtually all situations is part of how I’ve survived my darkest and most painful experiences. My optimism is not for lack of nuance, or my own cynicism, not born of a deficiency in sensitivity, and definitely not out of denial — for me, optimism is literally part of my survival. It doesn’t mean I don’t have fear, or grief, or sadness, or that this isn’t all overwhelming and challenging — it’s just that I don’t want to live solely in service to those feelings. This is how I survive: Cautious optimism. Excavating and confronting the things that bring me down. Gratitude. Helping others. Positive affirmation. Rinse, repeat. View this post on Instagramhome sweet home ? here’s some things that have been helping me • having a morning routine • starting my day with a workout • showering and getting dressed (doesn’t mean I need jeans but get out of my workout clothes or pajamas) • give myself set times to eat • write down a to-do list of work items that need done and tackle those first before being distracted at home • wait until 7pm/evening to turn on tv • if I’m feeling lazy, anxious, hungry whatever it is – letting myself be OK with those feelings and not pushing myself to be productive or having to do something, because sometimes doing nothing is the most helpful for me • what are some things that have been helping you? #homewithMH

View this post on InstagramAnother day, another lewk for me, myself and I to enjoy. I find that fashion has helped me keep my mind off of obsessing online reading every headline about Covid-19. I still do have nights where I wake up at 2am to pee and stay up another 90 minutes reading scary think pieces on my phone (which are necessary and important, but not in the middle of the night!). So fashion keeps me happy and uses my mind in other ways. What’s your outlet during this time?
